Worlds update - Men's qualifications...
THE World Championships 2009 kicked-off yesterday in London and the Irish Men’s team put on a strong performance in the qualifiers. Nineteen-year-old Luke Carson, the current Irish Champion, and eighteen-year-old Rohan Sebastian, scored 78.525 and 76.800 respectively placing them in 49th and 54th position overall out of 243 competitors. Carson entered the competition hoping to perform at his personal best. He performed well on all six pieces of apparatus, but due to the new judging code, narrowly missed out on a personal best overall score. He said: “The new code has changed a lot. If I did the performance I did today two years ago I would have scored a personal best. I did harder routines with a lot higher difficulties and I didn’t fall. If I did that performance two years ago, my score would have been a lot higher.” Fellow competitor Sebastian was disappointed with his performance. He said: “It did not go very well today. I’m not in the best shape, but it was a good experience.” Carson on the other hand was a lot more content with his performance and remains optimistic for next year’s event. He said: “Overall I am happy. I finished up pretty good. I had a slow start and let the nerves get the better of me, but I got over them and I finished up well on high bar. This competition has given me a lot more confidence. Next year I’ll have more difficult moves and I’ll go cleaner and my scores will shoot up.” Rebecca Wallace, Aimee O’Driscoll and Sarah Wedel will battle it out in the Women’s qualifiers today, October 14. Wallace said: “I’m really nervous because it’s the biggest competition of my life but I want to go clean with my routines and get a personal best.” Check back later for Women's qualifications update...
